POP UP CLINIC #5
I flew solo for Pop Up Clinic #5 tonight. We talked about everything from Blue Coverage, to 4x1 Empty, to Nose Tackles that cross face on back blocks. Bear with me as it was my first time flying solo and I did almost 2 1/2 hours! I hope you guys enjoyed it!

A NEW MISSION
They say all good things must come to an end, and thus, the “Deep Dive on Defense” series, as we know it, is complete. However, as you’ve seen there’s a new podcast in town, called “Make Defense Great Again!” I am super excited to start this new venture and I am happy for you to hear what we have in store. I just finished my first interview for the podcast with Kyle Cogan, talking about Cover 3/6 vs. Trips with Rip/Liz tags.
We will keep the same format you know and love until later in August where we will switch to an in-season Q & A format. I will either fly solo or work with a guest, and I/we will answer the questions you have for your next opponent. We will record on Thursday nights and you can go ahead in your scout and see if there’s anything you want help with. You will be able to submit questions here: https://www.coachvass.com/contact.html and we will try and answer them on the podcast. We will post the pod on Saturday mornings so you can listen and get the info you need while you are watching film over the weekend, and still apply anything to help to your gameplan. Then, once the season is over, we will go back to the long-form version where we cover one topic in-depth.
Originally, MDGA was not going to start for a couple of weeks, but as Southwest Airlines used to say, “life comes at you fast.” I will be releasing the first episode within the next 36 hours, hopefully no later than Noon Eastern time on July 23rd. We are on most major podcasting platforms including iTunes, Spotify, Google Play, Stitcher, Castbox, Pocket Casts, Podbean, and Player FM. For links to the corresponding podcast apps, click on the Podcast button on the top of the page.
In addition to the launch of the new podcast, I’ve launched a new website. (If you’re reading this, you’re probably here! In case you’re not, the address is www.coachvass.com). The problem with Twitter is that our existence is split into 240 character capsules floating around in the ether, and I wanted a central repository for everything related to what I do and a place for my friends to come and share ideas. Because of this, I have added sections where you can easily access old podcast episodes, other podcasts I’ve been on, my upcoming CoachTube videos, links to articles I’ve written and collaborated on, a way to contact me outside of Twitter, and a page if you’re ever interested in having me consult your team. Lastly, it’s a space for friends that want to write their thoughts down and share them outside of that 240 character bubbles.
If you are reading this and loved the Deep Dive podcast, I have a few messages for you. First, thank you SO much for your support. I wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for your interest. The outpouring of love for the pod has taken me by surprise and I am so grateful to give back to the game I love so much. Second, I need your help – I am just a high school coach with no corporate sponsors (yet), no mailing lists, etc. All I have is a bunch of football-crazed Twitter friends and this over sized electronic megaphone. If you love this podcast and this idea, I would love for you to spread the word. Please feel free to re-tweet this and all future posts, share articles and let your friends know who aren’t on Twitter. And if you don’t like it, lie your face off for me! We are starting this from scratch and we all know some coaches aren’t the most tech-savvy, and may not know how to listen to podcasts or what a podcast even is! Because of this, we need all hands on deck!
My other favor to ask is simple – come join us in the conversation! Each episode will have an official thread on Twitter where everyone can jump in on the discussion in one place. If you need clarification on a coaching point, have a different opinion on what we talked about, or think I am full of crap, please join in on the conversation!
Before I close this out, I want to give a special shout out to Brad Dal Bon (@tothehouse) who built this site on short notice and did a PHENOMENAL job. You can also follow his other account, @coachinggripes, which is fantastic! He is an amazing web designer and an even better friend. Without him, you would have gotten a Geocities page.
Lastly, I want to make clear that the concept of “Make Defense Great Again” is tongue-in-cheek. I will not get political, and we all know that if not established, there are some charged feelings about the original phrase I am satirizing. I want to get that out of the way because football twitter is an amazing place where the liberal and conservatives can come together, put our differences aside, and talk ball. Make Defense Great Again is not a political statement – it’s a statement of intent. We must Make Defense Great Again and we WILL Make Defense Great Again! Starting here!
Thanks for joining me on this ride!
